How do you make a Z in bubble letters?
Draw a top bar, a diagonal from its right end to the bottom left, and a bottom bar going right. Outline the whole zigzag, round the four corners and ends, and cut two narrow slots: one under the top bar on the left, one above the bottom bar on the right. Ink and erase.
- Draw the top bar. Pencil a horizontal line across the top.
- Add the diagonal. From the right end of that bar, draw a steep line down to the bottom left.
- Add the bottom bar. From there, draw a horizontal line to the right, a little longer than the top one.
- Outline the zigzag. Trace around everything at an even distance and round the two outer corners.
- Cut the slots. Make two narrow triangle slots: under the top bar on the left and above the bottom bar on the right.
- Ink and shade. Finish the line and shade under the top bar and along the diagonal.
What makes a Z easy or tricky in bubble letters
The Z's two slots are thin triangles, and they close fast when the strokes swell. A steep diagonal and long bars leave them room. Making the bottom bar slightly longer than the top keeps the Z from looking top-heavy. The two corners where the diagonal turns should be rounded on the outside but stay crisp enough on the inside to show the zigzag.
Lowercase z in bubble letters
Lowercase z is the same zigzag at short-letter height. With less space the slots shrink, so keep the diagonal steep and the bars wide. Some people add a short bar through the middle of the diagonal so a z is never mistaken for a 2; that bar should be as puffy as the rest.
Cute, 3D and graffiti bubble Z
Three bubble Z's in shrinking sizes make a sleepy "Zzz" for a bedroom door or a nap-time sign. In 3D, shadows fill both slots, which keeps them from disappearing. Graffiti Z's often turn the bottom bar into an arrow or add a lightning-bolt kink to the diagonal.
Common mistakes with a bubble Z
- Drawing the diagonal from top left to bottom right, which makes a backward Z.
- Letting the two slots fill in, leaving a puffy rectangle.
- Making the bars so short that the Z looks like a slanted line.
