O in bubble letters

O in bubble letters is a fat ring with a round or oval hole in the middle, like a doughnut or an inflated pool float. It is the shape every other bubble letter borrows from, so getting it smooth pays off across the alphabet. Scroll down for the colored O, the lowercase o and a printable ring to color in.

How do you draw an O in bubble letters?

Draw a slightly tall oval in pencil, then trace a bigger oval around it and a smaller oval inside it, at the same distance on every side. Keep the ring an even thickness, check the hole is centered, then ink the outline and add a curved shine near the top left.

  1. Draw the center line. Pencil a smooth oval, a little taller than it is wide.
  2. Trace the outer ring. Draw a bigger oval around it. Turn the paper as you go so your hand stays in its comfortable position.
  3. Trace the inner ring. Draw a smaller oval inside, keeping the ring the same thickness all the way round.
  4. Check the hole. It should sit in the middle, not drift to one side, and be big enough to read.
  5. Add the shine. Place a short curved white mark on the upper left, following the curve.

What makes an O easy or tricky in bubble letters

The O has no joins or corners, so it all comes down to an even, smooth curve. Wobbles show more on an O than on any other letter. Draw it in a few light passes rather than one heavy line. A slightly tall oval tends to look better in a word than a perfect circle, which can feel wide.

Lowercase o is the same ring, smaller. Make it about the height of the other short letters, with a stroke as fat as the capital's. Because the ring is thick and the letter small, the hole gets tiny fast, so keep the inner oval generous.

Cute, 3D and graffiti bubble O

The O is the easiest letter to turn cute: add two eyes and a smile and it becomes a face, or turn it into a donut with sprinkles. For 3D, the shadow wraps around the lower right of the ring and shows inside the hole on the upper left. The 3D graffiti letters guide explains how to keep that light direction the same across a whole word.

Common mistakes with a bubble O

  • Letting the ring get thinner on one side because the curve was drawn in one fast stroke.
  • Shrinking the hole to a pinhole.
  • Drawing a perfect circle that looks much wider than the other letters.

Questions people ask

Should a bubble O be a perfect circle?

Usually not. A slightly tall oval fits better next to other letters, because most bubble letters are taller than they are wide. A perfect circle can look like a gap in the word. On a single letter, like a monogram or a badge, a circle works fine.

Where do you put the shine on a bubble O?

Near the top left, on the outer ring, as a short curved line or a small oval that follows the curve. Put it on the side facing your imagined light, opposite the shadow. On a 3D O, a second tiny dot of white next to the first makes it look glossy.

How do you tell a bubble O from a bubble zero?

Make the zero narrower and taller, or add a slash or dot inside it. The letter O is rounder and wider. If you write numbers and letters together, like a date or a jersey, pick one difference and keep it the same everywhere. Bubble numbers are on the graffiti numbers page.
