N in bubble letters

N in bubble letters is two puffy posts linked by a fat diagonal running from top left to bottom right. That diagonal leaves two small triangle gaps, one opening at the bottom left and one at the top right. See the bubble N in color, lowercase and as a printable outline, then draw it with the steps below.

How do you write an N in bubble letters?

Draw two upright posts and a diagonal from the top of the left post to the bottom of the right post. Trace around everything, rounding the ends, and keep two narrow triangle gaps open, one at the bottom left and one at the top right. Ink and erase.

  1. Draw the posts. Pencil two vertical lines, a medium distance apart.
  2. Add the diagonal. Join the top of the left post to the bottom of the right post.
  3. Trace the outside. Outline around the left post, over the top left, and along the right post.
  4. Cut the lower gap. Between the left post and the diagonal, at the bottom, draw a narrow triangle opening.
  5. Cut the upper gap. Between the right post and the diagonal, at the top, draw another narrow triangle.

What makes an N easy or tricky in bubble letters

The N looks simple, but its diagonal squeezes both gaps into thin triangles. As the posts and diagonal swell, those triangles shrink until the N turns into a rounded rectangle with two dimples. Sketch the gaps first and build the strokes around them. A slightly steeper diagonal, or a letter that is a bit wider than a normal N, gives each gap more room.

Lowercase n in bubble letters

Lowercase n has no diagonal at all. It is a short stem with one hump that comes down onto a second leg, like a tunnel or an upside-down horseshoe. In bubble form, start the hump a little below the top of the stem so you get a small notch at the join, keep the tunnel underneath open, and end both legs at the same baseline.

Cute, 3D and graffiti bubble N

A cute bubble N can bend its diagonal into a soft wave, which still reads clearly because the posts stay straight. For 3D, a shadow inside each triangle gap makes the diagonal look like a ramp running between two pillars. In graffiti the N often leans forward or hooks the top of its right post. Type a name like "Nina" into the generator to see how two N's sit around a short i.

Common mistakes with a bubble N

  • Running the diagonal from bottom left to top right, which gives a backward N.
  • Puffing the strokes until both triangle gaps close.
  • Ending the right post higher or lower than the left one, so the letter tilts.

Questions people ask

Which way does the diagonal of a bubble N go?

From the top of the left post down to the bottom of the right post. Drawing it the other way gives a backward N, which young kids often do. Saying "start at the top, slide down" while drawing can help. Check the gaps: one opens at the bottom left, the other at the top right.

How do you keep the two triangle gaps in a bubble N open?

Draw the gaps first in pencil as two narrow triangles, then build the posts and diagonal around them. If they still close, make the whole letter a little wider instead of thinning the strokes. A steeper diagonal helps too, because it leaves more room on each side. Check both gaps again after you add the shadow.

Is a lowercase bubble n easier than a capital N?

For most people, yes. It has one arch and one gap, with no diagonal to plan around. That makes it a good letter for practicing how to keep a tunnel open under a puffy arch, a skill you need again for h and m. Once the lowercase n feels smooth, the capital is easier to try.
