L in bubble letters

L in bubble letters is just a puffy stem with a fat foot pointing right, which makes it one of the easiest letters to draw. The main things to watch are the inside corner and the empty space it leaves. Below are the bubble L in color, lowercase and as a printable page to color or trace.

How do you draw an L in bubble letters?

Pencil a vertical line and a shorter line along the bottom to the right. Outline both with an even thickness, round the top of the stem and the tip of the foot, and give the inside corner a soft curve. Ink the outline and erase the pencil.

  1. Draw the stem. Pencil a vertical line.
  2. Add the foot. From the bottom, draw a shorter line to the right, a bit over half the stem height.
  3. Trace the outside. Go up the left side, round the top, and come down the right side of the stem.
  4. Curve the inside corner. Turn into the foot with a smooth curve, not a sharp angle.
  5. Round the foot. Trace out along the foot, cap the tip, and return along the bottom.

What makes an L easy or tricky in bubble letters

The L has no holes and no joins to crowd, so it is a good letter for building confidence. Its tricky part is balance: the top right is empty, which leaves a gap in a word. Tuck the next letter slightly in over the foot so the spacing looks even. A foot that is too long also adds a gap.

Lowercase l in bubble letters

Lowercase l is a single tall pillar, like a capital I with no bars. In bubble form it is a long capsule. Because it looks so plain, it is easy to confuse with a capital I or the number 1, so some people give the bottom a small curve to the right.

Cute, 3D and graffiti bubble L

A cute L can curl its foot up at the tip like a skate. For 3D, the shadow falls along the stem and under the foot, which makes a nice L-shaped block. Graffiti L's often stretch the foot into a long swoosh or arrow.

Common mistakes with a bubble L

  • Drawing a sharp inside corner where the stem meets the foot.
  • Making the foot so long that it pushes the next letter away.
  • Drawing the lowercase l as a thin line instead of a puffy capsule.

Questions people ask

Why is L one of the easiest bubble letters?

It has only two strokes, one corner and no holes. You can focus on keeping the thickness even and the ends round. That makes it a good warm-up before letters with counters, like A or R. Practicing the soft inside corner on L helps with E, F and T later.

How long should the foot of a bubble L be?

A bit more than half the height of the stem. A longer foot leaves a wide gap after the letter in a word, and a shorter one makes the L look unstable. When you write a name, check the space after the L and tuck the next letter in if it looks too far away.

How do you space letters after a bubble L?

Slide the next letter in a little, so its left side sits over the end of the L's foot. Since the top right of the L is empty, spacing letters by their widest point leaves a hole. Bubble letters usually look best when they touch or overlap slightly.
