How do you write an H in bubble letters?

Pencil two upright lines and a crossbar at the middle, then trace around the whole shape. Round the four ends of the posts, curve the inside corners where the bar joins, and keep two clear slots, one above and one below the bar. Go over the final line in marker, then rub out the pencil.

  1. Draw two posts. Pencil two vertical lines, a little closer together than for a normal H.
  2. Add the bar. Join them with a horizontal line at the middle, or a touch above it.
  3. Trace the outside. Outline the left edge of the first post and the right edge of the second, rounding all four ends.
  4. Shape the top slot. Between the posts above the bar, draw a narrow U-shaped channel open at the top.
  5. Shape the bottom slot. Below the bar, draw an upside-down U open at the bottom.

What makes an H easy or tricky in bubble letters

The H is easy to read but easy to make boxy. When the posts and bar all get thick, the slots shrink to slivers and the letter starts to look like a square cushion. Keep the posts closer together than you would think and the bar slightly thinner than the posts. The joins where bar meets post should be soft curves, not sharp inside corners.

Lowercase h in bubble letters

Lowercase h is a tall post on the left with a single arch coming off it to the right, dropping down into a shorter leg. As a bubble letter the arch should spring from the post a little below the x-height, so you get a clear notch at the join. Without that notch, a bubble h looks like a fat n standing on a box.

Cute, 3D and graffiti bubble H

A cute bubble H can bend its posts slightly inward, like it is giving a hug. For 3D, shadows sit under the bar and along one side of each post, which shows the bar as a separate bridge. Graffiti H's often stagger the posts so one is taller, or tilt the crossbar.

Common mistakes with a bubble H

  • Spreading the posts so wide that the H looks like a squat block.
  • Making the crossbar as fat as the posts, which closes both slots.
  • Leaving sharp inside corners where the bar meets the posts.

Questions people ask

How thick should the crossbar of a bubble H be?

A little thinner than the two posts. A slimmer bar keeps the slots above and below it open and makes the posts look like the main shape. If the bar is as thick as the posts, the H reads as a rounded square with two dents. Placing the bar slightly above center gives the bottom slot more room.

How do you keep a lowercase bubble h from looking like an n?

Make the left post clearly taller than the arch, rising well above the other lowercase letters. The tall part is the only thing that separates h from n. Mark the x-height with a light pencil line across the whole word so every h rises above it while every n stops at it.

Why is the bubble H good for learning smooth joins?

It has four places where the bar meets a post, and each one needs a soft curve instead of a corner. Practicing those joins on H teaches you the same move you need for A, E, F and T. If all four inside curves match, your outline will look smooth and inflated.
