M in bubble letters

M in bubble letters is a wide, puffy letter with two outer legs, two rounded peaks and a V that dips down the middle. Since it has two valleys to keep open, it takes more planning than most letters. See the bubble M colored, in lowercase and as a printable page, then follow the steps below.

How do you draw an M in bubble letters?

Pencil two vertical legs and a V between them, then trace the outline. Round the two peaks and the feet, cut a narrow V notch in the middle that reaches about halfway down, and keep a rounded tunnel under each side. Ink the outline and erase your skeleton.

  1. Draw two legs. Pencil two upright lines, wider apart than for a normal M.
  2. Add the V. Join their tops with a V that dips about halfway down.
  3. Round the peaks. Trace over the two tops as soft domes.
  4. Cut the middle notch. Between the peaks, draw a narrow V-shaped dip in the outline.
  5. Shape the tunnels. Under each half, draw a rounded arch between the outer leg and the middle V.
  6. Finish. Ink, erase and shade.

What makes an M easy or tricky in bubble letters

The M has two valleys to protect: the notch at the top center and the two tunnels below. Puff the strokes too much and all three close. Keep the middle V shallow, around halfway, and the tunnels narrow but visible. The M is also the widest letter, so do not let it take over the word.

Lowercase m in bubble letters

Lowercase m is two humps side by side on three short legs. In bubble form, it looks like two rounded arches joined at the middle leg. Keep both humps the same size and both gaps between legs open. A lowercase m that is too wide can stretch a word, so draw the humps narrow.

Cute, 3D and graffiti bubble M

A cute bubble M can round its peaks like two scoops of ice cream. For 3D, shadows fill the middle notch and the tunnels, which makes the shape clear. Graffiti M's often stagger the peaks or cross the middle strokes; see the graffiti letter M.

Common mistakes with a bubble M

  • Cutting the top notch deeper than halfway, so the two halves look like separate letters.
  • Drawing the tunnels so narrow that they close.
  • Making the M twice as wide as every other letter in the word.

Questions people ask

How deep should the middle V of a bubble M go?

About halfway down. Deeper than that and the two halves look like separate letters. Shallower and the M becomes a puffy block with a dent. The notch should be narrow and pointed, so it stays visible after you add the outline and shading.

Why does my bubble M get so wide?

Each of its four strokes gets thicker when you inflate it, so the width adds up fast. Make the legs straight instead of splayed, and keep the inner tunnels narrow. You can also slightly squeeze the M while keeping its height. It should be wider than an N but not twice the width.

How do you draw the humps of a lowercase bubble m?

Draw a short stem, then two round arches side by side, each landing on its own leg. The first arch starts from the stem, and the second starts from the middle leg. Both arches should be the same height and width. Leave clear gaps under each one.
