K in bubble letters

K in bubble letters is a puffy stem with two arms that meet at the middle, one reaching up to the right and one kicking down. The joint where they meet is the hardest spot, since three fat strokes crowd in there. Below are colored and printable versions of the bubble K and lowercase k.

How do you do a K in bubble letters?

Draw a straight stem, then two diagonal arms meeting it near the middle. Outline the stem, round the tips of both arms, and cut a sharp V-shaped notch between the arms on the right. Keep the joint slim so the stem stays visible, then ink and erase.

  1. Draw the stem. Pencil a straight vertical line on the left.
  2. Add the arms. From the middle of the stem, draw one diagonal up to the right and one down to the right.
  3. Outline the stem. Trace the left side and round the top and bottom.
  4. Trace the arms. Go out along the top arm, round its tip, come back to the joint, then out along the bottom arm.
  5. Cut the notch. Between the two arms, keep a clear V-shaped gap pointing toward the stem.
  6. Ink and shade. Finish the line and shade under the lower arm.

What makes a K easy or tricky in bubble letters

The K is tricky because three strokes meet at one point. When they all swell, the joint becomes a blob and the arms lose their angle. Keep the arms meeting slightly away from the stem, or let the lower arm start from the upper arm instead. Either way, the notch between the arms must stay open and pointed.

Lowercase k in bubble letters

Lowercase k has a tall stem and two shorter arms that only reach the x-height. As a bubble letter the arms are small, so the joint has even less room. Make the upper arm short and steep and the lower arm a little longer, kicking out at the baseline.

Cute, 3D and graffiti bubble K

A cute bubble K can curl the tip of its lower arm. For 3D, shadows inside the notch and under the lower arm show the shape clearly. Graffiti K's often break the arms away from the stem or turn the kick into an arrow.

Common mistakes with a bubble K

  • Letting the three strokes swell into a lump at the joint.
  • Drawing the arms too flat so the notch closes.
  • Making the lowercase k arms as tall as the stem, which turns it into a capital.

Questions people ask

Where do the arms of a bubble K meet the stem?

Just above the middle. You can attach both arms to the stem, or attach the lower arm to the upper arm a little away from the stem, which leaves more room at the joint. The second option often looks cleaner in bubble form because the stem stays a clear, straight pillar.

How do you stop the arms of a bubble K from blending together?

Keep a clear V-shaped gap between them and do not let it fill with stroke. Draw the notch in pencil before the outline. Steeper arms, at about 45 degrees, leave a wider gap than flat ones. If it still crowds, make the letter a little wider.

How is a lowercase bubble k different from a capital K?

The stem is tall, but the arms are short and stop at the height of the other small letters. That leaves a tall stem standing above the arms. In bubble form the arms are short and fat, so the notch is small; keep it pointed so the k does not look like a lowercase h.
