Y in bubble letters

Y in bubble letters is two short arms meeting just above the middle and flowing into one fat stem, like a puffy slingshot or a tree fork. The joint where three strokes meet needs room to breathe. Below are the bubble Y in color, the lowercase y with its tail, and printable outlines of both.

How do you draw a Y in bubble letters?

Pencil two arms sloping in from the top corners to meet just above the middle, then a straight stem down to the baseline. Outline everything, round the three ends, and keep a narrow notch between the arms. Curve the outline smoothly where the arms flow into the stem, then ink and erase.

  1. Draw the arms. Pencil two lines from the top corners, sloping in to meet just above the middle.
  2. Drop the stem. From the meeting point, draw a straight line down to the baseline.
  3. Round the ends. Cap both arm tips and the bottom of the stem with half-circles.
  4. Cut the notch. Between the arms, cut a V notch that reaches down to the joint.
  5. Smooth the fork. On both sides of the stem, curve the outline gently where the arms turn into it.
  6. Ink and shade. Finish the line and shade one side of the stem.

What makes a Y easy or tricky in bubble letters

The Y lives or dies at its fork. If the arms meet too low, the stem is a stub and the letter reads as a V; too high, and the notch is a tiny dent. Meeting just above the middle gives both parts room. Keep the stem as thick as the arms, since a thin stem under puffy arms looks like a lollipop stick.

Lowercase y in bubble letters

Lowercase y drops below the baseline. It looks like a small v whose right arm keeps going down past the line and curls left. In bubble form that tail needs space under the line and should stay as thick as the arms, ending in a round cap. Match its depth to any g, j, p or q in the same word.

Cute, 3D and graffiti bubble Y

A cute bubble Y can curl its tail into a loop or end it in a heart. In 3D, the shadow follows the stem and fills the notch on one side. Graffiti Y's often turn the tail into a long swoosh under the following letters. For a "Happy Birthday" sign, the y tails in both words are a good place to add a curl.

Common mistakes with a bubble Y

  • Joining the arms too low, so the stem is short and the Y looks like a V.
  • Making the stem thinner than the arms.
  • Curling the lowercase y tail to the right instead of the left.

Questions people ask

Where should the arms of a bubble Y meet?

Just above the middle of the letter. Meeting there leaves room for a clear notch between the arms and keeps the stem long enough to read. If the arms meet near the bottom, the Y looks like a V standing on a stub. If they meet near the top, the notch is too small to see once you add the outline.

How do you draw the tail of a lowercase bubble y?

Draw a small v at the height of the short letters, then carry the right arm down below the baseline and curl it to the left into a round end. Keep the tail as thick as the arms. Leave enough space under the line on your paper, especially when writing on a card or banner with a bottom edge.

How do you fit the y into "Happy Birthday" in bubble letters?

Sketch both words lightly in pencil first so you can check the spacing, then outline each letter. Watch the descenders: the p's and y's drop below the line and need room. Make the H and B a little bigger than the rest if you like. The happy birthday bubble letters guide covers layouts and has a printable banner.
