Q in bubble letters

Q in bubble letters is a puffy O with a short, fat tail kicking out at the bottom right. Where you put that tail decides whether people see a Q or just an O with a bump. Here is the bubble Q in color, in lowercase and as a printable outline, followed by steps for drawing the ring and placing the tail.

How do you write a Q in bubble letters?

Draw a bubble O first, with an even ring and a round hole. Then add a short, thick tail at the lower right, crossing the ring at an angle and sticking out below and to the right. Round the end of the tail, erase the ring line where the two overlap, and ink.

  1. Start with an O. Pencil a slightly tall oval and trace a fat ring around it, inside and out.
  2. Find the tail spot. Picture a clock face on the ring. The tail belongs between four and five o'clock.
  3. Draw the tail. From just inside the ring at that spot, draw a short stroke heading down and to the right, ending past the outer edge.
  4. Outline the tail. Trace it as a fat capsule with a round end, as thick as the ring itself.
  5. Merge the shapes. Erase the part of the ring line that runs through the tail so the two read as one puffy shape.
  6. Ink and shade. Finish the outline, erase the pencil and shade under the tail, where it lifts off the paper.

What makes a Q easy or tricky in bubble letters

The Q carries the same job as the O, an even ring with a clear hole, plus one more: the tail. A tail that is too small vanishes into the outline and the letter reads as O. One that is too big pulls the eye away from the ring. Keep it short and as thick as the ring, and let it cross the ring at an angle so it looks attached rather than glued on.

Lowercase q in bubble letters

Lowercase q looks nothing like the capital. It is a round bowl on the left with a straight stem on the right that drops below the baseline, a mirror image of p. Some versions add a small flick to the right at the bottom of the stem. In bubble form, keep the stem as thick as the bowl and give it a round end, and make sure it never curves left.

Cute, 3D and graffiti bubble Q

A cute bubble Q can turn its tail into a curl, a tiny heart or a mouse tail on an O face. In 3D, the tail casts its own little shadow, which helps it stand out from the ring. Graffiti Q's often stretch the tail into a long swoosh running under the next letter. In English, Q is nearly always followed by u, so practice the pair together.

Common mistakes with a bubble Q

  • Shrinking the tail until the Q is just an O.
  • Hanging the tail from the middle of the bottom, where it looks like a drip.
  • Curving the lowercase q stem to the left, which turns it into a g.

Questions people ask

Where does the tail go on a bubble Q?

At the lower right, between the four and five o'clock positions on the ring. It should cross the ring at an angle and stick out below and to the right. A tail in the middle of the bottom looks like a drip, and a tail on the right side looks like a cup handle. Keep it as thick as the ring so it does not look like an afterthought.

How do you draw a lowercase bubble q without it looking like a g?

Keep the stem straight. A q drops straight down from the right side of its bowl and may end with a small flick to the right. A single-story g bends its tail to the left into a hook. If the bottom of your letter bends left at all, people will read it as g, so check that one detail before inking.

Should the Q tail cross into the ring or sit outside it?

Both are used. A tail that crosses into the ring looks connected and is the more common choice. A tail that only touches the outside edge looks neater but can seem stuck on. For round bubble letters, crossing in slightly and merging the outlines looks the most natural, and it holds up well when you add a 3D shadow.
