G in bubble letters

G in bubble letters starts as a puffy C, then gets a short bar that tucks into the mouth on the right. That inner bar, sometimes called the spur, is what turns the curve into a G. Below are the colored and printable bubble G and lowercase g, plus steps to draw both.

How do you draw a G in bubble letters?

Draw a round, open C in pencil, then add a short horizontal bar pointing inward at the lower right. Trace around everything at an even distance, cap the top end with a round tip, and leave a gap between the top end and the bar so the mouth stays open. Ink and erase.

  1. Start with a C. Pencil a round C with a generous opening on the right.
  2. Add the bar. At the lower end of the curve, draw a short bar going up and then inward toward the middle.
  3. Trace the outside. Outline the big curve from the top end, around the left side, to the bottom.
  4. Wrap the bar. Follow the bar inward, round its tip, and come back along its top edge.
  5. Keep the mouth. Check there is a clear gap between the top end of the G and the bar.
  6. Finish. Ink the line, erase and shade the lower curve.

What makes a G easy or tricky in bubble letters

The bubble G is a C with one extra job: fitting a bar inside its mouth without closing it. If the bar is too long or too high, it touches the top end and the G becomes a closed blob. Keep the bar short, only reaching toward the center, and set it low. The space above the bar should still look like an opening.

Lowercase g in bubble letters

Lowercase g usually appears in one of two shapes. The single-story g, the one in the images above, is a round bowl with a tail that drops below the line and hooks left; that is the easier one to puff up. The double-story g has two stacked loops and gets crowded fast. For the single-story version, make the descender hook wide so its curve does not touch the bowl.

Cute, 3D and graffiti bubble G

A cute bubble G can turn the bar into a little curl. In 3D, the shadow sits behind the bar and inside the lower curve, which makes the spur pop. Graffiti G's often swap the bar for an arrow or stretch it out past the letter; see the graffiti letter G for that.

Common mistakes with a bubble G

  • Drawing the bar so long that it closes the mouth.
  • Forgetting the bar, so the G is just a C.
  • Letting the lowercase g tail curl back into its own bowl.

Questions people ask

Where does the bar go inside a bubble G?

Low on the right side, at the end of the lower curve, pointing inward toward the center. It should be short. The top half of the G stays open like a C, so the mouth is still visible above the bar. If the bar reaches the top end, the letter closes and loses its shape.

How do you draw the tail of a lowercase bubble g?

Draw the round bowl first, then bring a stroke down from its right side below the baseline and curl it left into a wide hook. Keep space between the hook and the bowl. In bubble letters the tail should be as thick as the bowl stroke, with a round end, not a thin flick.

What is the difference between a bubble G and a bubble C?

Only the bar. A C is an open curve. A G is the same curve plus a short bar tucked into the lower right. Because the shapes are so close, a G with a tiny bar can be mistaken for a C, so make the bar clear and as thick as the rest of the stroke.
