V in bubble letters

V in bubble letters is two puffy arms leaning together and meeting in a rounded tip at the bottom, with a narrow notch cut down from the top. Think of an A turned upside down with no crossbar. Below are the bubble V in color, lowercase and as a printable page, plus steps for keeping that notch open.

How do you draw a V in bubble letters?

Pencil two lines that slope inward and meet at the bottom center, then trace around them. Round the two top ends and soften the bottom into a blunt, rounded tip. Cut a narrow V-shaped notch down from the top so the arms stay separate, then ink the outline and erase.

  1. Draw the arms. Pencil two lines that start wide apart at the top and meet at the bottom center.
  2. Round the tops. Cap the top of each arm with a half-circle.
  3. Trace the outer sides. Follow the outside of each arm down toward the base.
  4. Blunt the tip. Turn the bottom into a soft rounded point, like a worn crayon, instead of a sharp corner.
  5. Cut the notch. Between the arms, draw a narrow V reaching about halfway down. Keep its bottom pointed so it stays visible.

What makes a V easy or tricky in bubble letters

The V's trouble spot is where the arms meet. Two fat strokes crowd together at the bottom, and if the notch is short or wide-angled, the letter becomes a rounded triangle or even a heart. Draw the arms steeper than usual and keep the notch deep. The base should be a broad, round tip so the V does not look like it is balancing on a pin.

Lowercase v is the same shape at the short-letter height. Because it is small, the notch has very little room, so steep arms matter even more. In words like "wave" or "vow", the v sits next to a w that looks almost the same; the w simply has two notches and three tips.

Cute, 3D and graffiti bubble V

Round the top of each arm into a fat lobe and a bubble V turns into a heart, which is fun on Valentine cards. In 3D, the shadow runs down the outside of one arm and fills part of the notch. Graffiti V's often lean forward or stretch one arm higher.

Common mistakes with a bubble V

  • Drawing the notch too short, so the V looks like a filled-in triangle.
  • Leaving a sharp point at the base that clashes with the round style.
  • Making the arms meet off-center, so the letter tilts.

Questions people ask

How deep should the notch in a bubble V be?

About halfway down the letter, sometimes a little more. The notch is the only thing that tells a V apart from a rounded triangle, so it has to stay clear after the outline and shadow go on. Keep it narrow and pointed at the bottom; a wide notch makes the arms look thin and weak.

How can a bubble V become a heart?

Round the top of each arm into a fat, curved lobe and keep the bottom a soft point. The notch between the arms becomes the dip at the top of the heart. It is a cute trick for valentines or a name like "Viv", but in ordinary words keep the arms straighter so the V still reads as a letter.

Why does my bubble V look like a U?

The bottom is too round and too wide. A V needs arms that slope toward each other and meet in a narrow, rounded tip. A U has parallel sides and a broad curve at the base. Steepen the arms and narrow the bottom until the meeting point looks like the blunt tip of a crayon.
