Dad in bubble letters

To write DAD in bubble letters, draw two round D's with an A between them, soften the point of the A and add a thick outline and a shadow. DAD has only three letters, so you can make them tall and chunky for a card, a sign for his desk or a gift wrap label. Copy a version below or print the outline.

How do you write Dad in bubble letters?

  1. Start with the A. DAD is symmetrical, so draw the A in the middle first. Make its top a rounded dome instead of a point and keep the hole small and high, like a teardrop. A big hole makes the A look thin.
  2. Draw the D as a half-circle. A bubble D is a fat straight side on the left and a big curve on the right. Keep the inside hole narrow. D is close to an O, so it is one of the easiest letters to bubble.
  3. Make both D's the same width. Sketch the first D, then measure it with your pencil and copy the width for the second. Leave the same small gap, or the same overlap, on each side of the A.
  4. Let the A sit slightly in front. Overlap the A over the inside edges of both D's. This joins the three letters into one shape and keeps the word from reading as D A D.
  5. Writing Daddy? DADDY has a double D in the middle. Tuck the second D behind the third, keep both the same size, and make the Y fat and short so it lines up with the tops of the D's.

Colors and decorations for Dad

Blues are a common pick: an ice blue to deep blue fade with a navy shadow. Green, gray and his favorite sports team colors work just as well. Add small stars, a tie under the A, a mustache across the middle or a sports ball in the corner. White highlights on the curve of each D make the letters look round and polished.

Dad in graffiti letters

The graffiti image uses Blockbuster letters: big square letters with a deep side extrude. DAD turns into a strong blockbuster because D and A have wide bases. Make the corners square instead of round, keep all three letters the same height and run the extrude in one direction. See blockbusters next to other styles on the styles page.

Questions people ask

How do you make DAD in bubble letters look cool, not cute?

Use darker colors, square up the corners a little and add a deep 3D shadow. A navy outline, a blue or green fade and a thick block underneath look strong. Skip hearts and flowers and add stars, an arrow or a lightning bolt instead. The Blockbuster style on this page is the boldest version.

What can I write with DAD for a card?

Short phrases work best in bubble letters: BEST DAD, #1 DAD, LOVE YOU DAD, SUPER DAD or DAD ROCKS. Put DAD in the biggest letters and the other word smaller above or below. If you add a number, draw it in the same bubble style so the card matches.

Can a little kid draw DAD in bubble letters?

Yes. It is one of the easiest words, because D is almost a circle and there are only three letters. Let the child trace the printable outline first, then color it. Next time, have them write DAD in pencil and draw a big round line around it. Thick markers are easier for small hands than fine pens.
