Pick a shape to trace

The first page of the PDF has all twelve shapes with their names. After that, every shape gets its own page. Tap a shape to open its page, or download the whole set.

Which shapes should a child trace first?

Follow the order children can draw them in. Most can copy a circle around age 3, a square around 4, a triangle around 4 to 5 and a diamond around 5 to 6. Every shape practices strokes that later become letters: circles become a, o and g, squares and rectangles train straight lines and corners, and triangles and diamonds train slanted lines for A, K, V and W.

  1. Circle and oval: one smooth movement. Start at the top, by the green dot, and go round to the left, the same direction as the letter c.
  2. Square and rectangle: start at the top left corner, go right, then down, then back. Stop at each corner instead of rounding it.
  3. Triangle: start at the top point, slide down to one corner, across the bottom, and back up.
  4. Diamond: four slanted lines. Start at the top and go round, keeping the left and right points level.
  5. Heart and star: fun shapes once the basics are steady. The heart starts in the dip at the top; the star starts at its top point.
  6. Pentagon, hexagon, octagon and crescent: for kindergarten, when counting sides is part of the lesson.

How to use the one-shape pages

Start with the big shape at the top: trace it with a finger, then a crayon. Read the shape name together and trace the gray word. Then work through the rows of smaller shapes, which ask for more control as they shrink. Finish with the box at the bottom, where your child draws the shape without dots. That last step shows whether the shape has really been learned.

Make shapes part of play

  • Shape hunt: after tracing a circle, find circles around the house: plates, clocks, buttons.
  • Color by shape: on the all-shapes page, color every shape with straight sides one color and every round shape another.
  • Count the sides: on the pentagon, hexagon and octagon pages, count the sides out loud while tracing each one.
  • Reuse it: slip the page into a sheet protector and trace with a dry-erase marker, wipe, repeat.

Questions people ask

Are these shape tracing worksheets free?

Yes. Download the PDF or make sheets in the maker and print as many as you need for home or a classroom. There is no watermark. For selling printed copies, read the license.

What age are shape tracing worksheets for?

Ages 2 to 6. Toddlers can trace the big shape at the top of each page with a finger or a chunky crayon; preschoolers can do the rows; kindergarteners can draw the shape alone in the box and learn the names of pentagon, hexagon and octagon.

Why is there a green dot on each shape?

It marks where to start tracing. Starting in the same place every time builds the movement habits used later for letters, such as starting a circle at the top and going round to the left.

Can I print the shapes on US Letter paper?

Yes. In the maker, pick US Letter under Paper before downloading and the PDF is made at that size. The ready PDF on this page is A4 and prints fine on Letter with "fit to page".
